DC: Nest

she formed her nest of feathers
soft for the newborns arrival
with care
she touched each one
offering love to last their whole life long
 ~

two paintings were inspired

this nest is made of forget-me-not flowers

this weekends Drawing Challenge
was offered by: Ariane
her propmt: nest
*

I enjoyed considering nests this week:
our skull is a nest for our brain
body a basket/nest for our soul and spirit
earth nest for all life on planet
I thought of homes
or feeling at home
a place to give birth
to nurture new life
caring for life in a nest
these thoughts hold my heart like a nest holds eggs

~
thank you for being our wonderful host Ariane!

Blessings of Samhain to You

though autumn filled her days
and nights
she became a nest of new life for Samhain

~

a bit of information about Samhain:

*this year it is celebrated from
sunset on October 31 to sunset on November 1, almost halfway between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice.

*It is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals, along with Imbolc, Beltane, and Lughnasadh.

*It's considered a liminal time, when the veil between life and death grows thin.

*Samhain is pronounced "sah-win" or "sow-in."

*it is one of the original festivals behind the holiday we know as Halloween

*As it was believed that faeries, witches, and demons roamed the earth on Samhain, food and drink were customarily set out to placate them. Later on, people began dressing up as these creatures and claiming the goodies for themselves, sometimes performing antics or tricks in exchange for food and drink.

wonderful article about Samhain found here: Huffington Post

D.C.: Order and Chaos

nest: a sacred vessel
eggs: the perfect order for the promise of life
wee ones are born
then chaos begins

big smile

this week i have been working on two paintings with owls
in them

THEN i had an amazing encounter with THREE
Great Gray owls
a mother and two fledglings
it was at dusk, when they come out to hunt
so the photo is grainy:

some how i feel that all life is contained in this theme
the word 'trust' comes to mind
sometimes we can not see where all the tiny details are heading
where they all end up
perhaps chaos leads to order

or at least it can
*
thank you Barbara
for inspiring an interesting contemplation
~

Also:
a branch broke in a tree this week
it seemed like an arm offering this nest so that i could see it
previously it was hidden to my sight

such amazing 'order' in the way it is made!

grass
moss
lichen
mud
nicely glued to the branch

a sacred vessel
for the eggs and babies it held

Sage & Sepia

the magical realm of summer
of nature
a glimpse
~

first i painted the page a light sage green
let it dry
drew a border in sepia ink, with a dip pen

drew the picture with masking fluid
let it dry
painted over the mask with a light wash of the sepia ink
then peeled the mask away

~
the two little hummingbirds are growing up
eyes still closed

and look the photo is in sage and sepia colors:

~

Kristin,
thank you for hosting this lovely event, summer of color!

DC: Gossamer

in her dreams
the veil was open
she spoke with angels

as the nights went on
her days became ethereal
and even her skin
radiated like gossamer silk
~

Thank you for joining in for our Drawing Challenge this week.
participants will be sharing on their blogs
something inspired by the word:
gossamer

please visit:
My friend Annie found a hummingbird nest in her tree!
mamma hummer made the nest of lichen and gossamer spider webs
it is SO tiny

and look, two eggs

i read that they are made with gossamer spider webs
so that the web can stretch larger as the babies grow

now that is some smart engineering!
~
I hope you all enjoy a wonderful weekend
perhaps sprinkled with gossamer dreams
