Sunday Sketches

extra paint on the palette
oh dear
extra paint on the palette
oh my
brush it on empty pages
for another time
~

went camping a week ago
took watercolor pencils, this pad, water brushes
and colored pencils -
found pages colored with extra paint for the background
this meditative girl now lives on one

*

this wide eyed girl on another

the following sketch I made over a month ago
I will put it on gessoed wood
but have been stuck for my next step
i think it is the background I am uncertain of

I want to learn to plan the background, not make it up as I go
I usually do that latter

also her arms, what does she want to do with her arms
does this happen to you?

perhaps it is because I make art up in my head
perhaps it is time to have a model....

~
part of why I share this sketch
is to challenge myself to take the next step and complete it this week.

*

enjoy more Sunday Sketches!

  2. I love my water color pencils. I used to use brushes but having to haul them around, have a cup, set it up, etc got to be too cumbersome. SO, now I use a Copic blending marker. It really makes the colors come alive and no mess or clean up! Just a thought for you next trip! I used to have the same background issue, but now I sketch and color my images then cut them out and place them on the background I want. It gives each piece extra depth and frees up your creative process. I love your girls, especially the last one.

  3. Beautiful pages! Love the softness of your work.

Could the deer-girl (what is the right term?) also be a marsupial and have her hands in her pouch?

  4. i need to color:
thank you for your ideas, i will try the copic blender, fun!
yes, sometimes I do what you do and cut my main character out.... I suppose that is a possibility for this piece as well. Thank you!

    Eva,
that is a fun creative idea for her hands. xo

  5. Beautiful sketches, your style is always so soft and appealing. I have problems with what to do with arms also and today my imagination is on vacation.

Hi Tammie, it's so lovely to hear from you. The half girl, half horse is an exciting adnventure. Looking forward to seeing this painted. The faces your creating a so beautiful and soft and love the roundness. They get cuter every time!
My mum, uncle and grandad saw half man half horse across our fields near an old army bunker. She was only young and it scared her. Grandad said don't look at it as they walked. Mum said he was very handsome and at first though it was odd about his legs until she realised they we're joined.
I thought my mum had lsot it when she first told me this. Now I understand it much of been some kind of bleed through from another dimension. A huge one to take in. They really exist, which is cool.
Maybe your painting someone/ some girl who really exists.
    Hugs!
    Julie

  9. thank you ladies, so lovely to hear your thoughts and insights.

Julie-ann, i loved reading about your families sighting, so intriguing. Yes, perhaps a spirit is trying to come through, I think that happens in art quite often.

    lovely Sunday to you all!

  10. Use it up. Use it up. Don't be afraid. it's only color. It can't kill.

Thank you for your comment. I wish I can explain but it's very complicated.

  12. Yes! Doors that do not need to be opened. I regret opening some doors. Actually, all I need to do is stop caring and to not give a damn. Easier said than done but I am trying. I am really trying.

  13. Ces,
yea, i have opened some of those doors. it is hard to turn off caring when we do.

  14. Oy! I am so glad my son is growing up and the teenage angst are over. Peace! Actually I am more concerned about my own shortcomings and paying attention to crap, quite simply put. Ah I wish I was talking to you across the table, even though I don't drink coffee anymore. Maybe tea.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would love to talk across the table.... tea is good. or a walk in the woods.

Yea, peace with son, so valuable!
yes, our shortcomings can be so hard to feel, know how to change or let go of.

    my heart leans toward you.

  16. She wants to hold flowers that a cute boy gave her!

Anyway love these. My favorite is the top one because the peaceful look on her face was somehow contagious. All were really soft and pretty though.

  17. My Style:
thank you for your flowery idea, so fun to hear.
love that you got a contact peace from the top piece. Lovely evening to you.

  20. The gentleness and softness of the girl meditating is lovely. I look forward to see how your next sketch evolves....

  21. I especially like the girl with the pink hair. she looks quite at peace.

I also ponder over backgrounds as I usually just make it up as I go along. plus, I wonder what view it should be as mostly what I draw has nothing to with what's going on behind the character.

I think all artist has times when they have to pause and think about what's next. I think the hardest thing is to continue.

and the hands? yes, that is one of my biggest problem because I always draw them too small for the body, glad to know I'm not the only one who worry such things.

    have a lovely day.

  22. I love your sketches and also love water color pencils..I will also have to try the copic blender..New to me..Background does not seem to be my problem it is the main character of the piece I struggle with..LOL

You are very hardworking, and that translates into your art.
    A hug friend.

  24. now, this is my idea of camping!
looove all that comes from you
when you listen, along w/trees & sky & birds...

  25. ahhhhhhh....that first one is so peaceful to me. I think I'd like to jump into the painting with her and just cover myself in serenity for awhile. :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love your centaur girl. I'd give her a single flower to hold in one hand and let the other fall relaxed at her side.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Lovely sketches! Well done. Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week to you.

  28. I love your sketches! :-)

  29. I love the pink-haired meditative girl. She is so serene, and I love the centaur-girl. She could have a baby bird cupped in the palms of her hand...

  30. really nice drawings!

  31. That's a great idea for using up extra paint. That way, you're not faced with stark white pages that are so daunting. The ladies who now live on the extra paint are beautiful. They look very happy and at peace in their new surroundings.

Your centaur lady is going to be a beauty! When an image comes to my mind, it is usually about a certain action or vignette, so I usually know what the hands will be doing. In fact, I often do not know what the face and hair will look like until later. Whatever your lady is doing, I'm sure it will be brilliant!

    Have a wonderful day!

  32. I am so impressed at all of the wonderful things that come out of your head!

I have the same problem as you girl... I never know what to do with my hands in real life - hee hee :)

Can't wait to see what you decide to do with her...

    xo

  33. perhaps
she could be pushing her hair back with her hands...or rubbing her brow?? I love the emerald lady too!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Lovely! The first drawing here is like she's walking with her dreams.. in her dream.. of happiness..
And the second drawing-- I love the her green eyes! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Gorgeous sketches! The girls look so contemplative and serene. I do often wonder what to do with hands - should they be holding something? Often, I hide them behind their backs or place them outstretched! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oooh...so lovely..fabulous sketches...so enchanting!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Arms--ah yes, arms and hands--it is difficult sometimes to know what to do with them.

Hands are fun to draw--I find once I get the right perspective and where they should be on the page--then the arms naturally follow. Some people do it the opposite, though. I guess it depends upon how your brain works.

    ((hugs))
