this is my dear friend Lucy
her human is Terence
Terence gave me a conk to paint on
(conks grown on trees)
one day it occurred to me to paint his beloved Lucy on the conk
original inspiration, she often walks and sits on logs:
even on cold snowy days she loves to be outside
winter being her favorite season
(she is part husky)
that is why there are snowflakes in the painting
it was fun to seek to portray a real being in a painting
as i usually make them up

Such a beautiful painting and a lovely thing to do. The colours are so vibrant and jewel-like.
ReplyDeletethank you Sarah,
DeleteI like that: jewel-like colors, indeed. when these colors showed up on the piece i felt i was on the right track.
Such a sweet portrait and what a resemblance! I am quite bad at drawing animals, dogs in particular, so I particularly admire your skill! I like the idea of painting on the conk...what are conks made of? are they mushrooms? How do you prevent them from...hmmm...deteriorate with time? A big hug for you and a friendly pat for Lucy from me!
ReplyDeletehello Astera, conks are a fungus that grows on a tree. they are also known as artists conks, as many people have carved or drawn on them.
DeleteIt was not easy for me to portray Lucy, it was a good practice to do it though. I think Conks simply get harder with time, almost like wood. You would not want to leave it out to get wet, then it might deteriorate. Lucy is visiting today and says thank you for the pat and i return a big hug to you.
Such a beautiful painting of her, Tammie Lee..

I have never heard of Conks, how amazing!!! What a lovely portrait Tammie.
ReplyDeleteVery nice - I bet Terrence is very happy- it's a good likeness :)
ReplyDeleteLucy is darling! You've captured her so beautifully. Lovely, lovely painting!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for visiting, and leaving such a sweet note!
ReplyDeleteEres maravillosa!!!!
ReplyDeleteOioi, beautiful<3
ReplyDeleteOh, this is gorgeous! :) Your painting looks just like her. She is so sweet looking to. Is the conk you painted hard or was fresh and soft? porous? That is so cool. Oh, and how big is this one?
ReplyDeletehi Kae, I think the conk had not been alive for a long time. It feels like wood. To me wood is porous, but this was not soft. I coated the painted surface with gesso just in case it was too porous, this was nice to paint on. It is 6x9 inches. thank you for your lovely message.
DeleteLucy is a fine and beautiful and strong dog with a good heart! This painting on the conk is marvellous! You have caught her character and opened her lifestyle. "Art makes able to recognize how it is." (Paul Klee)
ReplyDeleteYes, Lucy is a gem. Sensitive, playful, a serious dog, but considerate, I could not love her more.
DeleteThank you for your message and the quote.
Lucy looks like a beautiful dog. I love the sideways look. Your painting is gorgeous and it looks just like her! Really nice! :)
ReplyDeletei also love the sideways look
Deletei think it means she is listening and attempting to understand
thank you so much SLS and everyone!
So beautiful and magical, what a great job you did of this! I played the match box game and chose the blue box, it had great meaning for me since I have started learning reiki and feel a new calling there!
ReplyDeleteOh Tammie Lee....I am smiling and so happy to see your wonderful rendition of Miss Lucy! HOW DARLING are both - real and painted! And a conk off a tree? I am so bad with my nature knowledge; what a lovely "canvas" upon which to paint her! Oh blessings to you sweet friend.
ReplyDeleteContinue your wonderful art, and thank as well for your kind comment. You know, I am not deleting my blog, I am still present in Blogland, but taking a long hiatus from blogging posts so I can focus on my private writing. All the support I've seen is overwhelming, and all I can say is that there are some wonderful people out there. THANK YOU! Anita
Whoa... your a fabulous painter!! You captured that dog perfectly!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea to paint on a chonk and it came out so well, you captured lucy perfectly.
ReplyDeleteAbout my little review, it was only during my blogpost from mid dec to mid january, not the hole year, otherwise the weather would have been totally devastating! Uahr.
Wish you a wonderful weekend!

Your dog portrait of Lucy is marvelous and amazing that it's painted on a conk. I see these tree mushrooms everywhere here too. Lucy looks like an amazing dog to have. I love the photograph as well.
ReplyDeleteWow, terrific portrait and matching that pose! And on (what I imagine is) such difficult canvas! I love the sparkle in it.
ReplyDelete*Gasp!* That is gorgeous! Truly gorgeous! You have captured her so well, and I love the golden moon. How absolutely lovely this is. Happy new year to you!
