Aura

~
Looking at my many of  my recent drawings, the ones I make up as I go along,
no photo or person to portray,
I am seeing a persona that lies under a personality.
It reminds me of photographic self portraits.
At least mine, I often will show a bit of myself that is not engaged with anyone else.
Something quiet, personal and unadorned.

My friend Anne is experimenting with self portraits
on her new blog, Not Your Usual Model
I love the exploration of who we are as women in the middle years of our lives, and sense that self portraits can inspire new awareness about ourselves.

Anne also just opened a new blog: Unconventional Beauties
It is a self portrait photo challenge blog: "For any woman who no longer feels fresh nor firm nor fair: Instead of receding from the public view, take your own picture; take as many as you need; find a vision of yourself that you like, and share it here; make it your pubic image."

You may enjoy a peak or join in the project.

  1. The woman in your drawing looks wise, gentle, kind and beautiful. Much like the artist who created her, I'm sure. I am just now exploring your friend Anne's fascinating weblogs. Thank you for the links!

  2. Hi Shayna~
I enjoy seeing through your eyes. Thanks for exploring Anne's blogs, she is a wonderful woman to get to know. I think that your profile photo would be a grand contribution to her photo challenge, what do you think? Or maybe you have others?

  3. Beautiful portraits. I like the little details, like the flower buttons. But the eyes -- you have such a wonderful ways of making the eyes speak!

  4. She has such a direct gaze .... something that is rare these days. After all 'the eyes are the windows to the soul' ... she seems to be open and looking. I'm off to look at your links now.

lovely of you to stop by. I love comments as I learn and draw. To see through your perspective.... it is very helpful to me. I am enjoying drawing eyes, all the little details that I never noticed before and to attempt to imbue them with light and life.

  15. I think I've sketched this lady's profile this week! She looks the same...Perhaps a little younger. Odd!
    I like her a lot.
I like the idea of self portraits too. We have to keep it real and I think "we" help with that...
    Have a great week Tammie!

  16. Your figure has remarkable eyes, Tammie, so penetrating and wise, and, yes, I think there is an underlying spirit to each of the sketches you've made so far; seems reasonable to think that the drawings you make would reflect your own perceptive and observant character, all your kindness and generosity, and all the beauty you find in the world around you. Thank you so much!

To those of you who have stopped by already, thank you for visiting my own very young efforts. I look forward to coming by and spending time with your own work during the week to come.

Tammie, thanks again. Hope you're enjoying a beautiful spring!

  22. thank you all so much for your comments and feedback. drawing eyes is amazing, they come to life and all of a sudden feel and look somewhat real and hold a certain spirit. Amazing.

Thank you all for considering Anne's new blog. It will be fun to see how it develops, it will need woman to share self portraits. I may have to become brave and do one myself!

  25. I can see the ages in her eyes. There's a chapter in Proverbs which speaks of Wisdom as a person. This wonderful sketch makes me think of her.
